Hi,

just moved into a new property and am gonna need to have it hooked up to the net.

its in a cable area so think i'm going with virgin however i'm concerned about the £25 installation charge. the reason for this is the fact that there is a cable into the house and at the end of it is modem *the blue one - think its the ntl one*.

know do you think i'll be exempt from the charge bearing in mind it will be 4mb max on the line and everything is already there?

thanks in advance, oh and if anybody knows of any better deals out there give us a shout the postcode of the property is ln1 3jz if you need to check availability but it seems to be in an www friendly area.

You could ring them up.

However I suspect they will send you a new modem anyway as the modem is linked to the account and reusing one that is already in the property could cause problems (IE if it's not been removed from the account it was previously linked to).

If it's an NTL one you'll end up with a new modem. My mum had Virgin Cable installed last week and they gave her a new modem, quite a small one I might add, nothing like the NTL one I had in Reading or the surfboard one when it first launched!

Yeah they are coming to update my old surfboard modem next Friday when they install my new HD box. I can't wait to finally be on 20 meg :)

When we got NTL the salesman said there may or may not be a £25 charge. We actually became quiet good friends with him and he said sometimes the engineers ask for the money and just pocket it so ring up and find out.

We had cabling for a TV in the front room and a modem in the study, but we wanted the tv in the extension on the back. The engineer who showed up to do mine was a really nice guy and didnt mention any money. He even left a load of coax for me because I said I wasnt sure where the TV was gonna go.

My girlfriend got NTL around the same time and she got some grumpy chav come to do hers.

He didnt ask for any money thought which is a plus. Hers was a lot easier as the wall box was already there and just needed about 3m of cable.

I think they would probably charge you if you had to have the wall box put in.

The engineers should NOT be taking the money. If you're eligible for the charge, it will come out of your first bill.

When I had just the 10Mb broadband installed last August installation was free. Then, when they rang and offered me a phone line and TV installation was free again.
