Virgin Media Ping Spikes - Anybody else?

They've been occurring non stop since I got back today. The ping may be 40~ for around 15 seconds, and then bam... ping's 200~. It's almost impossible to play BF3 with lag spikes like these, which I'm hoping will fix themselves. I've tried resetting the router and modem to no avail, and once everybody's in bed, I'll connect my PC directly to the modem and try to see if the router is what may be causing it. I know it's not just my computer having these problems, so's my phone, the xbox and laptop. I've checked VM's site for any planned maintenance/known issues, but it says there's nothing that should be wrong. Another thing that may be worth mentioning, my download and upload speed is fairly normal, the download speed is a few megabits short, but that's normal.

Has anybody else been experiencing ping spikes recently? Got a fix, or do you think they'll resolve on their own eventually?

I'm taking a random stab in the dark here but I'm going to guess your have the
Virgin Media Super hub (which is not so super)

When I had that I had those types of problems as well, on the 4th engineer coming out he
installed me the old modem & router config again and never had the problem since.

No, I don't have the SuperHub thankfully... I'm still on the 20MB package. It's just stumped me how all was well a few days ago, but now it's near impossible to play a good round of BF3.

Here's a snippet from the 'ping -t' command that's been running (pinging bbc.co.uk):

As you have said before, try without the router.

Check your power levels also on your modem config page. 192.168.100.1 if you need a user and password the default is 'root' 'root'. Look at SNR anything above 30dBmv is OK and anything below 55dBmv on upstream power level is fine.

Cant advise you on downstream power levels as they vary between different regions but I would say anywhere between -10dBmv and 15dBmv and you are in the right sort of region but closer to 0dBmv the better.

Only advise i have for you at the moment sorry

These are the downstream stats;

Downstream Receive Power Level : -1.8 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 38.7 dB

I'd say that's alright, no?

Yeh those power levels are fine.

Have you tried downloading something are you still getting your full download speed?

If you want a proper test go to Gamerhell and try downloading a demo off there that is at
least 2-3gig and see how fast a download you get.

If you don't get your proper speeds I would recommend giving them a call and telling them
about your problems and seeing if they say anything about it.

I think I'll leave it for now, because everything seems to be fine now. Although if it happens again, I'll give them a ring.

Thanks for your help.
