Ive installed a couple of single pc modem only installs for people with out a hitch but im having it fitted at my partners and we need a 4 port wireless router and i dont have a clue about what to equipment to use as im a 8 year adsl fan.

do i have to use the original modem as well? id rather have a all in one solution

Any one point me in the right direction?

2 have cropped up allready

Dlink 4300 but it seems very pricy and discontinued.

or a buffalo wHR-HP-G54-1 thats seems to be under £40

Yes you need the modem they supply. I tend to pimpthe WRT54GL over most things UNLESS you need faster than 54g wifi. The Buffalo is basically very similar under the hood to the WRT54GL and both can use DDWRT if you want more advanced routing features.

You need to use the original modem, as there are no routers with built-in cable modems that are compatible with Virgin Media (certainly are not allowed on the network)

Look at a Linksys WRT-54GL and change the firmware to DD-WRT, or alternatively Tomato seems to be becoming popular on here.

This is probably the best router you can get for cable, as long as 108Mbs is sufficient for wireless

First of all thanks.....

Pants you have to use 2 devices..........i thought there was devices with built in cable modems and they you copied the mac address over

So the cheaper buffalo seems fine?

WRT54GL. You know even with afterburner/speed booster it's 54G...

Gavin, the modems are tied to the network by serial and MAC, Virgin specifically prohibit using any equipment other than that they supply being used on the netework and you'll struggle to find a combined device anyway. Anyone who ever had the misfortune to share a feed with someone who used a JCube/black box etc back in the day will tell you the problems they had due to rf spikes on that feed thanks to the use of devices such as those. TBH the modems they supply are considerably better than the cheap and nasty adsl stuff given away free (not knocking ADSL here but some of the crap being pushed by providers - Livebox, Homehub etc. is dire), it's also going to be replaced in the event of failure as long as you are subscribed not just in the first 12 months, surely it's not the end of the world ?

soo. im confused now i need the modem so i assume i just get a router and plug the rj45 into the upstream of a cable router like a switch?

Also which is the model to get now as the above statement has now lost me?

Get yourself a WRT-54GL. Plug the modem into the WAN port of the router and Robert is your mother's brother.

For total control (but the firmware supplied by default is reasonable) install either DD-WRT or Tomato

Go to Linksysinfo for all your needs

I'm afraid Avalon has said too much and confused you. We are both on the same page on this - WRT-54GL from the link in my first post. You will not be disappointed

Simple Translation: Buy the WRT54GL and use the modem Virgin give you.

Sorry if I caused confusion by adding a load of background that wasn't much use to you :)

well i bought the linksys and the buffalo whr - hp -g54-1 so now have to decide which one to have for free as they are both paid for :D
