Virgin media speed upgrade

Have you restarted the modem? Have you checked the modem configuration? The upgrade involves a new configuration file being sent to your modem, so you want to make sure that's been received and the modem subsequently restarted.

Depends on the modem. With my Motorola it's a log entry showing the config file being downloaded (with the values in kilobits), with most of the others the speed is shown on one of the configuration pages.

I think its the second one from the bottom it should say 4960000 or similar for 4 meg downstream and a much larger number for the 20 meg. I would get on to NTL sorry Virgin.

Virgin media have upgraded something. Seen 20mb for the first time today. upgraded from 4mb to 20mb in december and its been running 1mb untill today ;)

root and root afaik for the models that do require a login (mine doesn't so not sure exactly).

Yup, mine says it's 'root' and 'root' I logged in, am already on 20MB and on 2nd to last have this...

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000

So I have max of 20Mb down and 768Kb up. :)

Although I'm currently running on about 4.5Mb and I don't get why.

If that is using your wireless connection you might want to test it plugging straight into the modem, that would rule out it being due to bad througput over your wireless network.

It appears it was something like peak hours or Virgin problems, as now it's at roughly 12Mb. My connection normally varies between 11Mb and the 20Mb. :)

And I don't use wireless, it's for girls. :p

Give them a call, as there's nothing you can do from your side unfortunately... although my experience of calling Virgin Media's tech support suggests that sticking a biro in your eyes is just as effective, infintely more fun and considerably cheaper than calling their tech support.

It's a shame cause they used to be very good. Now they suck the proverbial.
