Hi,

I am with virgin media and have been since they change from blue yonder or whatever its called lol

I am on a 10mb connection and they throttling me CONSTANTLY, from 9 in the morning till 12 at night.

I download a lot of movies and games, I also play Eve Online as well.

But I ran a speedtest and it shows I am getting a 0.18mb connection speed.

I have phoned them and got nothing but "Its the fair use policy" ****e, is upgrading to the 50mb package really all I can do?

It takes around 30 seconds to load a google search, around 1.5 days to download a 700mb movie, like 5 minutes to download a 3mb file and playing EvE it drops me every 15-20 seconds or I get major desync.

Is this the up or down speed? If its the down speed then there is something else wrong as the throttling will only lower it to a 2mb connection.

The upload rate is horrible as well, I have to go and do something else if uploading something to like imageshack, it can sometimes take 30 minutes, sometimes its instant

Right according to that table If I go over 3gig between them said times I get my speed killed by 75%.

It probably didnt help I just dowloaded 57gb worth of sims games for my daughter.

Does that 57gb continiue till I have served 57gb worth of throttling in terms of days, so they throttle me until I have came even?

At the risk of soundaing all righteous, if you're downloading movies all day, and i'm guessing their not altogether legit, then the money you save by not buying the movies could go towards the 50mbit package. :)

When i was on the 10mbit connection i got throttled as for some reason i was on their traffic management system, even though i don't download anything of size. I complained and they took me off and all was fine. Since moving home i'm now on the 20mbit tariff.
Gibbo, if you're constantly abusing the fair usage policy you can't really complain, your only option may be to increase your tariff.
200mb are on their way soon ;)

Shh :P dont tell anyone :D

I download the movies outside the tables times tho, I go to bed at like 11 and start to download it while I sleep so I have something to watch the next night before bed.

I download maybe 5gb worth of games a week, thats probably either 1 or 2 games, sometimes its 10gb as latest games are rather large.

The only thing I have downloaded thats huge is the sims 2 and sims 3 + all the expansions = a total of 57gb in 5 days.

This connection speed however has been going on since maybe november and its getting worse, its that bad im typing this up on my HTC Hero as the page is still loading.......

Actuslly i just remembered, last week a friend in Birmingham mentiond that he'd received 2 letters now from VM, threatening to disconnect him permanently if he breaks the fair useage policy once more.
so be careful, i guess.

just to echo all the above, downloading large quantities of illegal stuff WILL get you kicked off Virgin. I have a couple of mates, who although warned several times continued and now are banned from Virgin. They now have to make use of adsl. Also, in my experience, your connection will be throttled for about 2-3 weeks after downloading such large amounts. The way you are going your connection will be throttled permanently....

If you hit the limits then the traffic management only slows you down for 5 hours, at which point it starts counting back up from 0 again. So unless you hit the cap each day then you shouldn't have a continuous slow down. If you do then I recommend making a thread here: http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Fibre-optic-broadband-cable/bd-p/Fibre its the VM forum for the cable service and the threads get read and replied to by VM engineers, who can perform diagnostics on your line and remote tests on your modem to see if there are any faults that stand out and if its something that required a engineer to fix they can schedule an engineer to come by.

1 Movie per night? 1-2 games a week?

This 57gb is the largest I have downloaded since june last year when I downloaded family guy, american dad seasons.....

So I cant download a 700mb movie per night or a game per week?

Doubt it, been using torrents since I can remember and never had this issue

@3dcandy

Last time I checked torrents arent illegal and go via many website and trackers, the files at the end may be illegal but the torrent itself isent. So technically Virgin cant do **** about it.

I hope so.
Jeez Dude you're taking the **** & should be throttled. Buy a bigger package.

I had a letter from virgin not long ago telling me to stop downloading big files between the time 9am to 9pm on y 20mb internet package. I'm a big anime fan and i'm forever downloading anime series and movies to watch so i have to pause my downloads untill 9pm and leave my laptop on all night to get my anime downloaded. It sucks but i would rather download at night than been cut off as that is what they said to me in the letter in a polite way.

Anyways I aint on here to debate about torrents being legal or illegal, me being a douche or cheap *******.

I simply want to know if anyone with 10mb package has the same issue, someone who dowloads the same as me.

I can literally tell you what I download actually.

Right alreadys stated, 700-800mb movie at night, maybe 1 game a week, sometimes 2 so 5gb there.

Every monday I download the new family guy, cleveland show, american dad :p so 450mb there.

+ my everyday browsing.

Dont know what eve uses but dont think its much.

I can easily upgrade to 50mb but last I checked, they are starting to throttle that since 100mb is in the line, sorta seems the person with the most money gets to avoid the fair use policy.

From my experience if you just download over night you should never run into any issues. Looking at my router log the last few months I've been downloading between 300 and 480GB and upload around 10 to 15GB a month. All heavy usage is done usualy between 2am and 6am. Never had a letter from VM, never had <20Mb except when I have exceeded the STM limits for a downloading during the hours mentioned.

Looking at my Giganews usage for the past 2 years I've had between 7GB and 500GB of usage per month. I only ever get throttled if I download during the traffic management times - I queue everything up overnight and let it run. I'm on VM 10mb.

Just a thought, are you on VM Cable or ADSL? The traffic management for ADSL is different in that if you exceed the limits they'll manage you for a week rather than for a number of hours. I had a friend join up with VM ADSL and discovered this - and promptly left!

Hi mate, I never said you were downloading illegal stuff, just pointed out that they will disconnect you if you do. No finger pointing, just pointing out experience...I don't give 2 hoots what you do with your connection...

However, on the lowest packages my point is that you will be throttled quite hard to protect the packages above you, as you've said. Of course they want you to stump up the extra!
