can someone tell me what modem/routers are compatible with VM cable broadband

They will supply a cable modem, all you need is a cable / broadband router.

Modems - you'll be supplied with one

Routers, and ASDL/Cable router with a wan port and not a built in modem.

Linksys WRT54GL seems to be popular

is that linksys thing you've quoted all i need (she needs) and a cardbus in this case

Yes, since Virgin Media will supply a cable modem - you just plug that into the router.
