So i've been swapped over to the awful national service due to moving home, my ping on cs etc is around 200-250 which is horrendous as i'd get 10-15 on my previous fibre optic connection.

It's really frustrating sometimes I can't even physically play/watch youtube or do anything at times. Will an upgraded router make any difference? I'd imagine the one they ship out is pretty basic so I was wondering how much an upgraded router may help my cause for better speeds and lower ping? Any help is appreciated, I powerline my connection if that helps also.

There is nothing that's to 'Usain Bolt' about the speeds i'm getting, i'm pretty close to the exchange to.

Check with virgin to see if they're upgrading cables in your area, it's a shame because their fibre optic kicks ass. If not I'd switch to BT I'd avoid sky like the plague

This. Virgin Media is brilliant (when in a non-congested area) but Virgin ADSL is terrible.

You can use this to test what exchange you're on: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker

Ideally Sky/Be/O2 LLU would be best if you can get, or maybe Sky FTTC/BT Infinity if you can get.

The following services are available in your location:

BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
AOL LLU
O2 / Be LLU
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU

Are what's available, but i've not long changed from the fibre optic and I remember them saying it starts as a new contract, so I think i'm locked down for a year with this. :( Also got abused for the 'connection' fee aswell, ridiculous.

My previous fibre optic connection was perfect and I never had a problem in the 6 months I had it.

Well that's painful, you can end the contract early if you want but that's pretty expensive. But once it ends, go with Sky LLU.
