I signed up to virgin last week, during the night i get 4-8mb, but during the day at the moment i am lucky to download a file at 10-15k, webpages takes nearly a minute to load if they have any images on them, its brutal.

Is anyone else having these problems (dsl not cable).

According to virgin they are working on the network which will take a week to solve, but is virgin always this poor in the evenings? I can switch within 28 days if im not happy but id rather get it sorted out this week.

Usually dont have any bother from my virgin line, just the problem TriedandTested said, the dam traffic shaping.

Virgin are Excellent!??!?!? What Tosh!

Been in this house since July. Untill 28th September had the previous tennants 2mbit line, with 2mbits speed all day every day. On the 28th this ended, so I phoned up to create our own account (4mbit) but was told Id have to wait until the 8th October until I got the modem as they were revamping there systems!

Modem arrives on the 8th, setup, plug in, getting speeds of nowehere near 4bit (anywhere from 1000k down to 14k at some points!). Phones them, sit on hold for an hour. Emailed them 7 times, got a responce a month later sayign there is a proble, but they have no details or planned shcedule to fix it! Then the usual 'check this check that unplug this unplug that' garbage. ITs now well over a month and we have internet never running above 1mbit, normally 200-300k, with 5 people in the house! I also have no internet account as they ahve not sent any details through! Phone up about the internet account and spoke to 4 different people, all supposedly customers services, but who put me through to the next person with the "ill just put you through to customer services" line. Got told I was a Telewest customer at one point....

So basically, yes, internet access here (and in most of Plymouth) seems to be utter trash, and Virgins customer support is more than rubbish. IF only we had a phone line and we could have ADSL!

You are a customer of what was formerly Telewest, if you want to go back a little further it's Ex Eurobell to be exact, your account is hosted on a computer system that NTL never used as such if you called up from a non Telewest line you run a good chance of getting through to an ex NTL member of staff who may or may not have the training/ability to access to your account at the point you called (they only recently switched everything over to the TW system appart from the Broadband side but that's another story), hence the passing to another person and the reason you were referred to as a Telewest customer. It's a PITA atm but it should be sorted by now.

You will have an account and they can easily find it from the address details. One thing worth noting though is the Maximum theoretical speed you'll get on a 4mbit connection is 504k a sec and that's assuming you aren't living with four people hogging your bandwidth, 300k is on the low side but that could be 100 different things. Your best bet for a quick knowledgeable reply is the news group as afaik they are still well monitored, before you do however try one pc directly connected to the modem and run the speed test here

Ive had 2 problems with virgin myself. One was poor speeds, which they traced back to the box outside and replaced the required parts (corroded connections in a manhole), and the other was a faulty digi box, which they came out and replaced straight away. Ive always found their customer service to be excellent (Was previously a telewest customer), and ive never gotten less than what ive been paying for.

with regards to the OP, you would have to wait, if they are doing maintenance, then how about asking for an extension to the 28day contract period?

I must say, appart from some problems, virgin is great.

I had really slow speeds for 3 days, now everything is fine again.

it was maintenance, and its done now.

also@ PhillyDee, I had the exact problem. VM customer support is 10 times better than any internet company in the Uk imo.
