Hey,

I have an account with News Hosting, Im on 10MB I would have thought it would max my connecting with atleast 1000kbs. But my speeds are only 500 - 600 its fast but it would be better if it was at my connections full sped. Could this be because News hosting only offer 8 connections. Would I be better off with another usenet company?

I am on Virgin 10Mb and I have a news server with 4 connections. I am currently getting 500-600 KB/s but thats about par for the course on a Sunday evening as it is a busy time. Later on(1am-ish) and tomorrow when my neighbours are at work I will go back to 1.17MB/s.

All you can do is curse contention ratios

On BY 10Mb and just checked and am getting 9.2Mb downloading headers from Giganews on a normal NON SSL connection

I was going to start a topic about the exact same thing. My Usenet has been hopeless for the last 2 weeks or so, I've been downloading at 1200kbps for the last 6 months or more. Recently this fell down to around 500 - 600, which is a hell of a drop when you get used to (and are paying through the nose for) 10Mb.
Right now I'm sitting looking at no more than 35 - 40kb/s which is just ridiculous. And it's 00:30 and I couldn't imagine contention being an issue(never has been before). Anyone else getting this problem?

I just changed the port I was using to the use Cogent pipe. And then turned utorrent off and im now getting 1.1mbs instead of the 120 i was getting.

You run UTorrent while downloading from NG's and wonder why it's all a little slow ?! Now that's 1337 :D

Try different ports? Im with newshosting and on port 8000 i get around 700k/sec, on 9000 i get full pelt 1.17Mb/sec. Seems to change about though, sometimes i find other ports are faster but I would say generally its getting worse.

As previously said lots of connections is the way forward. I’ve got 16. 8 to one port 8 to another.

Some of you MAY be experiencing the throttling that Virgin are trialling in certain areas. Download a certain amount in a specified period and the download speed drops markedly to 5MB speeds.
