Title Says it all really, ive been trying to get a customers Virgin email to work in outlook it recieves but doesnt send im using a company broadband line however and using smpt.ntlworld.com to test all this.

Is it true sending emails can only work thru a Virgin broadband line ie within the customers home?

nope works fine for me when I'm at work (ex Blueyonder) you have to turn on the 'my outgoing server requires authentication' bit in outlook and put the email account details in there

Ah but that is likely to be using your works outgoing mail server, not your own.
It's quite likely that VM only allow access to their SMTP servers from known hosts (I work for an ISP and we intercept outgoing mail for this very reason).

Nope, deff going via the smtp.blueyonder.co.uk, doesn't work unless I authenticate against the BY servers. (Also helps being one of the few that can get out to the net with SMTP access...:))

Thx chaps for all the info and for jmc777s link which confirms Virgin smtp requires a virgin line only, that explains why we couldnt get the emails to work from our store while testing :)

The link explains that it DOES work from a non-Virgin line, if you set your email client up properly.

I can also confirm that I am using Virgin (ex-blueyonder) SMTP server to send mail from my BT ADSL connection and also via my 3 mobile broadband. Like the previous posters have mentioned, you just need to enable SMTP authentication.

SMTP authentication is a method of identifying yourself to our SMTP servers by using your Virgin Media username and password. This means that the servers will recognise that you are a Virgin Media customer (regardless of where you are connected from) and allow you to send email through them.

Please note: To be able to access the Virgin Media mail servers from a third party network, the network you are using needs to have allowed access and not blocked remote access to other mail servers. If you are in doubt, you should check with the third party network provider.

Oh boy

Why couldnt u chaps just left it alone

Gonna have to spend forever now sorting out this customer issue !
I looked at that link and the part where it said it requires Virgin line and that was end of it lol

Can anyone confirm something for me ?

If I use the customers username and password and try to log onto Virgin Webmail via there website and its not logging on, then theres an issue with the username or password right ?

Sounds silly but I have a customer that insist her username/passwords correct.....
