Virgin speed confusion

I've just been upgraded to 100mb with Virgin but when I do a speed test on speedtest.net I get about 48mb/sec.

My computer is connected to the super hub which is sat next to the computer via ethernet, this computer is running windows XP and the ethernet controller on the computer is showing 1 Gbps.

Another computer in another room also connected to the Superhub but running Windows 7, this one shows over 100mb/sec when I do a speed test on speedtest.net.

As the 2nd computer is showing good speeds, is it windows XP thats slowing the connection on the 1st computer ?, I've tried a different ethernet cable but as I said the controller is showing its connected to the superhub at 1Gbps anyway.

ME = Confused :)

Try another port on the superhub? Try updating the LAN drivers on the XP PC? XP shouldn't be slowing it down.

Hi, I've tried updating the drivers and even uninstalling the Ethernet in device manager but still have the same problems, I'll have a try at doing what PistolPete says and see if I can sort it out.

Forgot to mention that I'd already tried a different port on the hub as well.

Speedtest.net can be a bit weird, try a different location/server for it.

Yep tried different servers and locations, its strange that one computer is showing 100mbs where as the other (which is next to the router) is half that even when doing the tests within seconds of each other.

Windows XP does not optimize the computer to use the 100mbps connection like the windows 7 PC.

Go to www.speedguide.net/downloads.php and download TCP/IP Optimizer. Run it, slide the bar all the way to the right. Click the custom pin thingy at the bottom, click apply, reboot and enjoy your 100mbps :)
