Virgin Superhub Asus router issue

Hi guys, i've had a superhub 1 and asus rt-n56u combo for a few years now and had no problems but i upgraded to 152mb and got the Superhub2 today.

Problem is when I use it with my asus router i only get 98mb but if i use the superhub 2 on its own i get 152mb.

I use a lot of features of the asus and really want to keep using it.

anyone have any ideas what's wrong or what i could do to fix it?

I'm stumped
 
Are you using wired or wireless? Are you using a cat 5e/6 cable to give you gigabit speeds between the router and modem? Have you got the SH1 in modem mode? Have you enabled any features in the router that might be disabling hardware acceleration?

its the SH2 that i'm having the problem with and yes it's in modem only mode
SH1 used to be in modem mode yes and was fine
SH2 in modem mode causes my speed to be 98mb down
any idea what those features may be called? I probably wouldn't have touched them
if i disconnect the sh2 from my asus and switch it off of modem only then i get the full 152mb (160 in fact)
 
Strange, it sounds like the connection between the router and modem is being limited to 100mb.

What happens if you leave the Asus router connected, but the SH2 in router mode?

it works fine almost as if it was in modem only mode (but the speed is only 98mb)

and yes i agree it seems like the router is the issue and limiting it

I've performed the quick install on the router i haven't done a full factory reset (will backup my settings and try it)

i can't change the mtu settings on the router it seems but that guide suggests checking through windows elevated command which i just did and from what i can see it seems fine (but i'll read it a bit deeper)
 
Ok i've narrowed it down, it must be a cable.

I took a laptop to the router and plugged it strraight in and i get 160mb

But the wiring to the desktops upstairs goes to a switch which then networks to all of the devices (2 floors up)

i checked the switch and got 98 mb

i check the entry point of the switch and got 98mb

so the cabling that goes up 2 stories must be at fault, damn
 
can anyone explain why i would still get 160 from the crappy superhub over that wiring though?

Asus routers are fussy about cabling. It needs to be decent quality or they seem to go for a safer fast ethernet speed rather than gigabit. Somewhere in your wiring/switch setup, something is bottlenecking it down to fast ethernet speed instead of gigabit. I would suggest your router and SH2 should be close together, rather than far apart and joined by a long cable.

It's a bit difficult to make more than a guess as you haven't told us anything about the length of cables or what is connected where. The best test would be to get a long bit of cat 6 cable, and just run it about the house connecting to each part of the chain of equipment to see which bit drops the speed down.

router and SH2 are connected by about 0.5m of cable, they sit on the same shelf, the cabling goes to the attic where most of the computers. consoles etc are

from the router and the modem which are next to each other, a cable runs about 30m up to the attic, it then is connected to a 5 port switch and another 5m to each device from there
 
I have exactly the same issue with a TP link switch.
130MB when directly connected laptop in to SH2 but 88MB when running through the switch. I also noticed that the upload dropped to 4mbps when connected to the SH2 and improved to 11mbps through the switch. Looks like uploads are poorer when connected directly. I can't figure this out.

What switch are you using? Sounds to me like the switch you are using here isnt a gigabit switch and instead is a 10/100mb switch. This is then causing the bottle neck.

You can upgrade the switch pretty cheaply. Eg http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-238-NG

but you can spend as much money as you like on switching. For various reasons I run a managed switch and this one is great (but 3x the cost of the previous one)
