My friend is having issues with a virgin superhub

By a wired connection he'll usually get 100MBPS but by wifi it'll be much slower around 4MBPS and this is with full wifi signal - Connecting to the wifi by either a laptop or computer which is using a wifi card causes the connection to drop quite often - I looked in the router settings but couldn't really see any issues - Any idea what could be causing this

There's your problem. They're well known for terrible wifi performance, especially the SH1. The only good use for a SH is modem mode bridged to a decent router.
