Afternoon,

A friend of mine is having issues accessing his work VPN using Virgin internet.

He works for EE and the VPN it's self is BT's open reach. Apparently Virgin media block as standard.

He's having to work from his mothers house to access the internet.

Is there anyway around this with Virgin? different modem/router settings? different hardware setup?

Virgin have not been very helpful in trying to resolve.

If anyone has any insight it's greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Maj

He has to use the BT open reach VPN for work. Other VPN's do work, but he has to be logged in to BTs VPN which Virgin won't allow?

Just from the question and terminology used this doesn’t feel like it’s going to have a positive outcome, 3rd party, no direct source of information, limited understanding etc.

1. BT’s Openreach doesn’t exist. Openreach are a separate company to BT who look after the network that is re-sold by the majority of ISP’s in the UK, I don’t recall them offering a VPN service as they don’t really provide much of anything to end users directly.

2. Virgin literally block sites as ordered by UK High Court order, the same list of sites is used by BT and many other ISP’s for the same purpose.

As we have no idea of the hardware/software/router being used here and from the sound of it neither do you, we’re limited to taking random guesses... parental controls/web filtering are obvious, making sure your friend isn’t running a 3rd party VPN while trying to connect to the work VPN and actually speaking to his employers IT support desk would all be pretty obvious, has any of that been done/confirmed?

A potential fix is logging into the Superhub, go to advanced settings > firewall and ticking "IPSec Pass-Through", "PPTP Pass-Through" and "Multicast Pass-Through" - then press apply at the bottom. Putting the Virgin Superhub into modem mode and using a reasonable router also usually fixes this and gives you stable wireless/ability to change DNS settings amongst many other things.
