I'm running x64 Server 2008 and using Virtual Box. When I try to load a x64bit guest (vista x64) the guest machine displays the vista message that you are trying to load an x64bit OS on to a processor that does not support x64bit.

Is there a setting to tell virtual box to use dual core or someat??

I'm using the x64bit version of VB.

That happens to me too, but in vmware when trying to install any 64bit OS, Ive tried everything but nothing works, evern checked that the virtualization technology was enabled in the bios and it was. So I give up and Im just using 32bit OS

I've seen it before with vmware and I used VMWare workstation which seemed to work better.

I'm pretty sure I've had this before with my Dell machine and it has been because the BIOS virtualization setting doesn't exist but I though that was really only there to make the VMs quicker.

Phil,

After doing some research here is what I've found out.

Go to Intel and load up the Intel Processor ID Utility (I think CPUID will do the same).

That will tell you if your processor is VT enabled.

With that said, to support virtualization, your BIOS must also initialize the virtualization layer at boot on your processor before a Hypervisor can use it. Some BIOS simply don’t. In this case, your processor has the capabilities but the VMX feature is simply not available.

Ok, I now know the following about Virtual Box at least.

If you have a dual core CPU and have virtualization technology enabled in the BIOS AND run a 32bit OS it will let you emulate a 64bit guest. (You have the option to choose various x64bit versions of the OS you would like to install).

But, if you install Virtual box on a 32bit OS which does not have VT enabled, the options to install x64bit OS's are not even given, only 32bit versions.

Similarly, if you install VB onto a 64bit OS and the above is true (VT is disabled or not present) you will not see the option to install x4 guests.

If none of the above is true then the last paragraph from my previous post is valid. Perhaps check for a BIOS update.
