Seems like it's possible to run the wireless version of Virtual Desktop in wired mode.

i was messing about with this a few weeks back with a differant usb-c to ethernet adaptor. in the limited testing i did it worked really well, or at least well enough for me.
it didnt work wih all the ones i had, i think i tried the kensington mobile dock (think it was Kensington UH1400P USB-C 8-in-1) and it didnt work, might have been power requriements.
i didnt really test with games just that it was working through virtual desktop.
i honestly didnt think it was anything new and would have thought others would already know its likely to work..

Yeah, its not a new thing, but there are new users to VR who are chasing the low latency genie.

I am still interested in trying this, as it is a lot cheaper than a router as as I do flight sims I dont mind the cable.

i tried it this afternoon as i was playing around with the D6000 (didnt work when i tried it), and had this odd flickering when sharing the desktop, but not in steamvr home.
ended up using a dell usb-c nic i had from work and using a usb extention cable to do some of the testing i wanted. no power pass through though

kensington dock afrrived will play with that a bit, power passthrough isnt great. a 64w charger does a trickle charge, and holds battery under load.
will try check network port over weekend expect

All connected now but Windows will not allow me to make my eithernet profile private. Tried the regedit fix and turned it on and off. Any ideas?

Thanks for your interest, I did read something about creating and running a batch file but I hoped I could just plug the stuff together and make some settings. I might just go down the wireless route.

This is what I didnt notice User errors in the how to set up.
Plugging the ethernet cable directly from computer to the headset. Need a router with DHCP

dont have a spare router i guess? might have been ok if you could manually set an ip address, but doesnt seem to be the possible/case from memory.
if you have a spare pc and a usb nic could try creating a diy router openwrt/opensense/pfsense

so far the kengington mobile dock has one issue i've identified:
  • to charge the headset im plugging in a dell 65w charger to basically do a trickel charge underload.
  • with the default 20w charger it just doesnt charge, so either its not passing enough power through and the dock is taking 10w's or so, or the dock isnt passing the singals through quiet right.
  • would complain about issues with the card reader slots i think, as it wants to format a usb device and failes

other details:
  • network port did work, wifi disabled everything seemed to work ok, and the games didnt complain about not having wifi turned on and connected which is a plus.
i was able to access external usb devices.
  • usb hard disk
  • usb video capture, connected to external computer.
i havent tried external hdmi at the moment.

D6000 dock, power and usb works, bit odd using a mouse and keyboard but worked with out issue. network port didnt seem to work for me still, added external network (the 2x i had) didnt work on the usb-c port.

will have a play further the d6000, its possible the d6000s works better.
have some live play testing for the kensington dock to do tomorrow.
