I know that in a virtual machine, everything is emulated, so its all run from the CPU, meaning graphics have to be done on the CPU as well, though is this the bottom line? I'm looking to use a virtual machine to deal with some programs that don't like to run in a window, by using a VM I can force them into that window, but they need a graphics card present to startup, which the XP mode from win7 doesn't provide.

Any way around this, or do I just have to carry on as I am?

Edit: Running Win7 x64 if it helps.

Thanks for that, though I'll add that I'm running Win7. I'll edit that into the first post.
