Has anybody set up a virtual PBX with a UK SIP/VoIP provider? This is a new area for me that I'd like to have a play with. I've seen things like FreePBX and PBX in a Flash as possibilities but I'm a little hazy on how these link to a provider of an actual phone number.

Small-scale recommendations welcome :)

I had a look at 3CX but the free version is a bit lacking on the features compared to the open source alternatives, so I'll pursue them first. I've been playing with Elastix and Sipgate, but I just can't get the damn thing to connect. I'm sure it's firewall rules but I can't find any logging in the Elastix UI so I'm flying blind.

Will give PIAF a go next. How do you guys handle SIP trunks through a NAT firewall?

Got it working :D

It took a while to find trunk settings for Sipgate that worked (every site with an example seems to be different) but it finally connected last night and I can make and receive calls and leave voicemail too. Very clever stuff. No firewall rules necessary in the end.

Next move will be to add a VLAN for VoIP...
