tried the beta of this to install vista rc2 as a guest on my xp64
problem is , i set up a vista program to start vpc , and it makes a virtual hard drive etc then a box pops up to say , selct a diff boot device and restart program ,
i put my vista dvd into my cd drive but it wont install , can anyone help me out?

i'm not familiar with virtual pc (vmware user), but surely you'll need a virtual dvd drive too and you'll have to configure that to read from your real drive. also you might need to configure the bios on the virtual pc to boot from cd first.

do you still have the vista iso on your hard drive? because if you point your virtual pc towards that, installation should be much quicker (well it is in vmware :p).

Have you tried putting the vista dvd into your dvd drive instead of the cd drive?

a) Run Virtual PC
b) Check that the CD/DVD drive is configured for your secondary controller under settings (or whatever controller your optical drive is attached to)
c) Start your Virtual Machine
d) Select the relevant "use Physical drive:" on the CD/DVD menu on your virtual machine. That is the corresponding drive letter that your DVD is on your host machine.
e) Reboot the Virtual machine

On occasion, you may need to set the boot order manually. Reboot the virtual machine. Press F2 to enter the BIOS, and change the boot order.
This should work for you.
