Just setting up virtual PC on my home system. but my windows installation file is on my PC, not a disk, how can I get Virtual PC to recognise this please? Does it have to be an ISO file?

Personally use Virtual Box, iirc it has a virtual dvd rom built into the launcher program. Place the ISO anywhere on your computer, mount it in the setup program and install as if it were a bare metal PC. I guess VMware is similar? If not Virtual Box is very good, never had a problem with it

thanks, I take it I place the iso file in my VMware folder?

You can place the ISO anywhere on your machine or even burn it to disk.

I use Virtual Box also and to do it in this, when you have the drive created and running, click on devices and then choose mount drive. This will allow you to browse to the ISO image and set it as the first boot. Restart the box and it should boot from the image.

VPC2007 can grab an ISO, i think it's something along the lines of options->capture iso (once you've booted the VM up). It needs to be in ISO format or a burned bootable disc to boot from, unless you already have a VHD/VMC combo built, in which case you just need to open the .vmc file.

I have tried this, it says loading files but then it says:

Windows failed to start, blah blah blah

Info: Attemtpting to load a 64 bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with 64 bit mode.

So a little confused now, in my BIOS, hardware virtualisation is enabled

Your CPU doesn't support it then

assuming it's the i7 980x in his sig, then i think it's pretty safe to say it does support hardware VT. :p

it's virtual PC that does not support 64bit guests. so grab virtualbox or vmware player. my preference is for vmware.

Ok will give that a try, thanks for the advice
