hey all,

I'd like to run/practice my bash shell scripting skills while at home with my xp pro running pc.

I was thinking down the line of having a virtual pc running Unix.

I’m new to virtual machines so please be gentle.

any thoughts?

This can be done, and there are many free virtual PC programs out there. Once you have the appropriate software, it's like having a test machine next to you; you're able to install an operating system on a virtual hard disk, and you can easily make backups by copying the virtual hard disk into a different directory.

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007
VirtualBox

it's a doddle. install virtual box and off you go. don't use virtual pc - i find it slow and many other people complain about it's lack of support for non-microsoft operating systems. :)

a little tip, rather than using cds/dvds to install your guest operating system, use iso images instead. they run much faster than physical media.
