Long story but will cut it down suffice to say I have a lappy 4hb duel core intel cpu and 64 bit O/S windows 7 Ultimate

Now I am trying to study 70-640 but after trying to install first virtual pc which said that I didnt support 64 bit sub then tried duel boot which has limitations in that if I try to add clients or extra domains I have to come out of the boot system ..

Now I have tried Vm player but again when it comes to accessing the Core install set up I am having probs as I cant log on as another admin as the second virtual drive only lets me log on as another user and not as another admin even though I have created a new virtual drive and installed the server 2008 under a different name..

At the end of the day all I want to do is to be able to follow the course and use the server in a virtual env and be able to switch from one image to another but it seems that no matter what I try I am coming up against problems .. (Yes I know that some of them may be of my own making as I will be the first to admit I do not know everything about vm ware)

Could someone advise on how I can get a virtual system up with maybe 2 sets of configurations so that I mess about with core and add/remove programes and change name and ip of the server/add/remove it from a domain

Sorry about the length but I am becoming increasingly frustrated at this HELP

what?

i don't understand anything you've written but installing windows in a virtual machine isn't rocket science. you have windows 7 installed and presumably vmware player? create a new virtual machine, follow the wizard, start the VM and then install windows 2008 as if you were sat a real pc. rinse and repeat for however many machines you need.

I think he's trying to say that when he goes to install 64bit Win2008 under whatever virtualisation software he is using then it fails saying that he has no 64bit support, (possibly due to having no Intel-VT support in his CPU ... without a model we can't say).

How the OP can get around this .... I don't know, (or rather I don't a way which doesn't involve buying new shiny things (any excuse))

the OP posted about that the other day. he was trying to install 2008 r2 which of course is 64bit only. i assume he now has 32bit 2008 standard??

if you really wanted to mess around with 2008 r2 and not spend money, you could have course install it on the laptop as a host OS and then virtualise your clients/member servers to connect to it. i've done that in the past.

edit: to the OP, i just noticed the word "core" in your post. you really don't want to be messing around with that. install the normal version.

Have you tried Virtualbox yet? I prefer it over the other solutions so it might be worth you having a go. If you're running into problems running x64 guests then just use x86 2008.

First of all sorry for my lack of clarification on what I am attempting to do - Yes I am run a duel core intel and yes it doesnt support v tech so cannot run the 64 bit R2 so am using standard windows server 2008
I am using core as it is in the course module for win server I would like if possible a way to create a virtual machine that I can change the settings on 1 or more would be great without having to mess around with my duel boot 2008 as it means I have to keep coming out of the duel boot and configuring then going back..

I could set up my other pcs at home which are all on the network but I am trying to do this course at work but obviously cannot plug my lapptop into there network to try things out...

Thank you to everyone who has replied and I hope I have made things a bit clearer in respect of what I want to acheive...

:)

Okay, try using shorter snappier sentences.
The word is dual, unless you have swords or a flintlock pistol, in which case you can duel.

Are you trying to create a dual-boot of server and win7, and then within win7 access the server using vmware? It is rather difficult to comprehend what you are trying to convey.
