Virtual Surround Sound audio format?

Hi all, so I have a Samsung soundbar that does virtual surround sound. However it is technically a 2.1 system and I'm confused about what audio format I should use.

Do I just feed it a stereo signal, like PCM Linear?

Or do I use a surround sound signal, like bit stream DTS?

As you can probably tell, I'm not too clued up when it comes to audio.

On the site it lists DTS and Dolby Digital 2 CH. Had a look at the manual and I can't see that it specifically mentions about what should be used when using optical. As above, just try the different output options for the PS4 and see if Dolby Digital works.

per thread on soundbar attach to NUC, send soundbar mulitchannel dolby surround (dts/ac3) 2.1 or 5.1 so it down mixes; not 2 channel requiring 'up'-mix.
If you let soundbar 'extract' the .1/lower frequencies it will make a bad job, so just send it that channel. (similarly my pan tv makes a bad job at merging 5.1 to its two inbuilt speakers , base too predominate)
