I am looking to make vaguely decent(ish) virtual tours on a frequent basis.

The easiest and quickest solution I can see is http://www.0-360.com/ seems to take a photo through a mirror and then make it into a virtual tour, the quality suffers at expense of convenience, though.

Does anyone have first hand experience in doing this type of thing, possibly with a rotator kit?

I used to make these. The best way is to grab a 360 head like the Nodal Ninja and a fisheye lens (I used an 8mm for tight spaces and a 15mm for normal).

Then it's a case of using something like PTGUI to do the stitching. Here's one I made with the 15mm & PTGUI to give you an idea (http://www.360cities.net/image/exeter-cathedral-devon-uk)

Using the mirror way means you're limited to the entire scene being over one photo which gives a low resolution result, fullscreen it's not going to be pretty. It is a lot quicker and simpler though and does have certain benefits like not having to worry about things moving since it's a single shot.
