Virtualbox now supports VirtualPC and VMWare images!

I've never heard of VM images what are they?

I have Virtual box and have installed the OS from an image so know what that is, but what your on about is different?

Fantastic - downloading now.. The faster networking will be a relief for me (plus can get rid of Virtual PC as long as all my VPC images re-validate)

virtualpc and vmware are just other programs that do the same as vbox basically..

this means if your mate had a vmware image, you could just setup vbox to use it, no hassle

also, i think acronis true image can create files as vhd now too, so you could directly mount them in here instead of having to do a full restore

Looks like it only supports IDE VMWARE boxes, the default is SCSI, I tried with an IDE Workstation 6.5 image and it's doesn't do anything!

That said I've never used VirtualBox before so I could be doing something incredibly stupid ;)

Strange Headrat - im sure virtualbox opens SCSI VMware images (well, i have not changed many of the default VMware options and virtualbox opened up the VM just fine). It even loaded a VM configured to use two physical cpus, although obviously had a problem using them!

I quite like virtualbox - it does have a nice interface (much better than the horrible web interface of VMware Server 2), but having found that you can use the VIClient interface for VMware Server 2, im afraid i have not really found a reason to use VBox... When they get virtual SMP going, i'll definately look at it again.

I've tried loading a few of my VM images, they hang for 5 minutes during startup then reboot.

Ah brilliant - time to reinstall VB!

Got to say that VB is cracking bit of software and with this move they will become a whole lot more popular!

Quick question on VB... I downloaded it and tried to installed 2008 54bit and it wouldnt work even though I am using vista 64 and have the 64bit VB installed...?

Sorry for the hijack

Managed to install XP without any issues as such. However trying to setup Shared Folders throws up a nasty error dialogue box.

I installed the latest version and as soon as the install finished my wifi started playing up, I've uninstalled Virtual box and now my wifi is fine again.

Anyone else had same problem?

Yes in regards to Wifi. I uninstalled it this morning as I woke up. I ended up going to bed the previous night trying to work out why Wifi was on the blink but couldn't figure it out. Shame because things were really, really looking good.

I haven't gone back to any version just yet. Going to look into the issue once I break up from work next week :/
