Hi Guys

I have a trial copy of Windows Server 2003, and want to try and learn a bit about it. So, I thought stick it in a Virtual Machine, so I got Virtualbox.

Installed it, and tried to get it on the network and it wouldn't work.

I did a ipconfig/all to find it was pointing to the gateway of 10.0.1.2 when my gateway is 10.0.0.2. I use NAT and DHCP on my router. Is there anyway that I can get networking to work in Virtualbox?

Would installing a secondary NIC help?

i haven't got virtualbox installed at the moment so i might not be 100% exact with the terminology on this.... :p

what you need to do is create a host network adapter. should be on the options for your VM. now assign it to the virtual machine. then once you have done this, you need to go into the network connections of your host os. this new adapter you've just created should be showing here along with your real connection. just highlight the 2 together, right click and select "bridge connections". that's it really. now your virtual machine should be on the same network as your real pc and router. :)

any additional VMs will need host adapters creating and adding to this bridge also.

not familiar with virtual box but have used vmware with 2003 server and it worked fine

what do you mean by the network not working? accessing other machnies on your network or accessing the internet?

if its the internet you have the enhanced security thing to deal with i just uninstalled it

if its accessing other network machines are you sure the win 2003 is on the same workgroup / domain?

Try changing the adaptor type to PCnet-FAST III
Make sure it is attached to - NAT and that it has a Mac Address.

You can change all of the settings my right clicking on the OS and selecting settings. Also once installed make sure you install the Virtual Box Guest Additions.

select NAT

host interface only works if you're using a cable (not wireless -took me ages to figure this out!)
