VirtualDub and 6 channel audio error

I've trying to increase the audio level in an AVI which has AC3 6 channel audio, so I select stream copy for the video, processing for the audio, select the compression method as the same as the current audio and increase the volume by around 9dB but when I say save it complains that there's no suitable audio compressor.

Do I need to install something on top of the k-lite codec pack? or is there an easier way of doing this?

Is the answer that this can't be done? from reading around it looks like doing anything to an AC3 audio stream within VirtualDub may be a no no?

it needs to be converted to another format such as a .wav, mp3, etc. I suggest you demux the video and audio into seperate streams, then convert the audio stream to a .wav

Can I then convert it back to the same format? ie AC3?
