Virtualisation Software - Which one?

I have just installed windows 7 ( 64 bit ) and wish to run a virtual machine. What is the best VM software to use? I was going to use Virtual Box but a collegue of mine always used VMWare, which has now made me dither.

What are your opinions on VM software?

Is VMWare free? If not I think I will use VirtaulBox
