Virus check in safemode

Sony laptop which is not loading windows properly (i just get an empty blue screen).
I've managed to run some spybot and malwarebytes which were both able to update in safe mode and found plenty of junk. I've ran AVG but i dont think its an updated version. and i can't update in safe mode.

And i can't take the hard drive out (well its a pain to) to plug into another computer to scan it from there.

So what options do i have?

You can download the virus updates files manually from the AVG website and put them on disk/flash drive and use the manual update option within AVG itself.

I have found Avast works great in safe mode to clear out viruses. I'd recommend you give it a try

Is this a Vista machine? My Vista laptop decided to blue screen after running a Windows Update, which I wasn't impressed with.
