The other day my friend informed me their laptop was infected and I'm unable to have a look at it tonight. Only now they have told me that it won't boot past the welcome screen.

I'm popping over tonight to see what I can do, what programs do you recommend I use to try and sort it out? No idea what exactly is up with it yet.

Boot up in Safe mode and run an anti-virus program that way, its quite possible you may have to use a system restore point.

MalwareBytes, SuperAntispyware, Sybot S&D, McAfee Stinger, HijackThis and Avast with latest updates is normally what I keep on a USB Stick.

I would strongly suggest you scan with all the spyware progs I mentioned (MalwareBytes, SuperAntispyware, Spybot S&D) as they each can catch slightly different nasties.

Then run Stinger (not really essential, but I would run this) and install Avast or whatever other AV you chose and run a full scan.

Finally, run HijackThis and see if it finds anything nasty still lurking. You can upload the log here for analysis... http://www.hijackthis.de/en

overkill...

MalwareBytes and Microsoft AV should be free and enough to deal with any of the normal spy/virus stuff around, i carry them on a memory stick, SPYbot went down hill and bloaty and Mcafee & Avast are poo

... get on the machine.

delete cookies and temp folders (speeds up scans)
run MalwareBytes & and then install Micorsofts AV and run that

CCleaner, Spybot S&D, NOD32 and HiJack this

If its any sort of proper virus none of these methods will help and you will probably have to boot from a recovery cd if possible. When i had one many years ago i couldnt use safe mode and ended up doing a reformat.

I was told that the wallpaper had been changed to say something on the lines of "Your're computer is infected...." and so on and that she couldn't run a virus scan as it wasn't letting her.

Just remember the updates for Malwarebytes, personally I'd stick adaware on it, I don't like it much but it has cleaned the odd problem that malwarebytes missed.

Both have to be updated to the latest definitions though.

You all ain't a clue, Combofix is by far the best malware removal tool i've come across, all the above mentioned ones have failed on more than one occasion to remove the malware that's infecting the system.

Microsoft's malicious software removal tool is pretty rubbish too.

Oh while I remember, something I forgot to mention before. Turn off System Restore while cleaning, then back on again only once you are sure the system is cean.

Combofix has plenty of faults too (and we need to be asked by an expert ;) ) i prefer Malwarebytes after testing the pair, Combofix site was made by a 4 year old
