Can anyone make any recommendations for a virus scan with a management console for enterprise. We currently use mcafee and i find that it is completely ineffective when it comes to malware and it also slows down the start up and running of the pcs. We also have this problem when it updates it hangs the pcs completely and this is a known issue with it. So we want to move away from it.

Requirements:

is low on resources (does not slow down pc when updating or on boot)
supports windows 7
prevents malware
has a management console

Anyone have any recommendations ?

We installed nod32 at this one site but it blocked the smtp on roll out and caused a lot of hassle, they are thinking of going with sophos, anyone tried that. We were going to go with MS end point protection, but that requires SCCM and the client is not too positive about sccm.

If "prevents malware" one criteria, then no AV or anti-malware application will work for you.

You must have a multi-layered approach to malware & viruses: web protection in the form of a mandatory proxy with AV scanning & the ability to block downloads (mainly to prevent malware droppers from working) and ideally an AUP banner page. Email must be scanned, and desktops need up-to-date AV and apps, including Flash Player, Java and any Adobe products.

The last line of defence is your desktop anti-virus - it should ideally never actually need to find anything, because the other defenses would have prevented it in the first place.

Sounds like you don't have your EPO server configured correctly, we use McAfee VSE 8.5i with EPO 4.5 with none of the problems you have mentioned. You just need to set the right policys for each OU.

I have used Sunbelt (now GFI) Vipre at some of the companies we support. Not a resource hog, cheap as nuts and appears very effective. We have it running on a 1000 PC/75 Server network for the past year and so far no infections.

ESET NOD32 Business Edition + Remote Administrator.
Used it at my last two jobs and recommended it to a lot more places too that have started using it.
Excellent product.
