A friend of mine was experiencing some problems with their laptop. I volunteered to give it a bit of a checkup. It soon became clear that it was pretty heavily virus infested. I have run a few Mcafee and Adaware scans of the drive via a USB adaptor, then another couple installed on the laptop itself.

I thought I had managed to clear it, but I noticed some strange internet behaviour. I do not appear to be able to access a number of major antivirus websites on the laptop. Navigating via a a www address just gives me an error page, while accessing the sites from a search engine seems to redirect me to some random websites.

Any ideas? I’ll include a hijackthis scan, if that’s of any help (I don’t think there is anything on there I can see that’s bad).

I can nevre understand them log files but if you are having trouble getting to AV sites have a look in the HOSTS file (windows/system32/drivers/etc/ on my system)

Make sure there are no funny entries in there as well.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ehTray] C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exe

Looks slightly dodgy, any idea what that is?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscntfy.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\VirtualExpander\VirtualExpande r.exe

What about them too?

I thought I had managed to clear it, but I noticed some strange internet behaviour. I do not appear to be able to access a number of major antivirus websites on the laptop. Navigating via a a www address just gives me an error page, while accessing the sites from a search engine seems to redirect me to some random websites.

As malef!c said, check the hosts file, it probabaly has some entries in there that are causing the redirection.

Unfortunately this will be just a symptom of a virus infection. If you edit the hosts file to get rid of the entries, the actual virus will probably rewrite those entries to the hosts file on reboot or even sooner.

Anyway, post the contents of the hosts file here.
