Some wierd stuff has started happening on my PC, task manager has been disabled, says its been blocked by the admin (even though i'm the admin and there's only one account on the pc) and there's this popup in the tray saying I need to download some anti-spyware carp (which incidentally pops up 9 different windows). I'm on vista x64, and stupdily have no antivirus/firewall/spyware protection apart from the one windows gives you, but i've never had any problems in the 8 months i've been without it up until now. Is there anyway I can re-able task manager, or has anyone else had this virus/spyware? Next step would be to get some antivirus software I guess, dunno which one to get thought so any recommendations would also be good.

What i would do, firstly is get something like Super Antispyware and boot into Safe Mode, when ** in Safe Mode, run MRT and if that picks anything up it will remove and restart, run SAS then, again in Safe Mode, and see what that picks up.

If you still have the problems after, it might be easier to format and reinstall windows, I have had problems in the past and found it quicker to completely reinstall than to try and get rid of the problems. What AV/AS/Firewall would you use normally?

Used to use zonealarm, AVG and registry cleaner etc, but at the moment i'm just using the bog standard windows firewall, windows defender and windows malicious software removal tool. Just downloaded Avira and i'm running a full system scan. Disabling taskmanager is rather worrying though. In the user accounts section on the cp it still says i'm admin :/

Avast are apparently introducing AntiSpyware capabilities into v.4.8 - so that might be something to consider, i use Avast, Defender, and Win Firewall which i have never had any problems with!
