Going to be in Prague for 10 days or so in the summer visiting family and general holiday. My daughter learning German at school so I think it'll be cool to try it out on some real Germans. Having a look, seems the easiest way for a day trip is via train to Dresden (~2hr). Germany hasn't really been on my radar for destinations so does anyone have experience of this side of the country (near Czehia)?

I do. We've hiked the Malerweg trail which straddles the river Elbe and at its eastern most point is only a couple of miles from the Czech border.

Pirna is the closest large town, a few miles south east of Dresden.

The train line runs alongside the river and if you can catch a train from the Czech Republic you don't need to go as far as Dresden. You can jump off at the following small towns:

Bad Schandau
Stadt Welhan

Nothing is written in English, all German. Very few English speakers but they are welcoming.

We're going back there in four weeks to complete the trail.
