Vista 32-bit VS 64-bit

64-bit will be a long, long time coming yet. Habits tend to stick around. Look at something like your keyboard - a gazillion times more simple than your OS. There have been several attempts to change the QWERTY layout to a more efficient, faster typing layout for today's keyboards - have they stuck around? No. Why do we still use QWERTY? Who knows - it was originally invented to actually slow the typist down so the mechanical hammers on typewriters wouldn't jam - when was the last time you saw a mechanical typewriter?

32bit is established and will hang around QWERTY style for years to come until you cannot buy a 32-bit OS anymore.

Actually QWERTY wasnt designed to slow typing down, it was designed so that you could type really fast without the hammers hitting each other. The whole point is you can press letters on opposite sides of a typewriter without the mechanics jamming, but if you hit two adjacent letters on the same side of an old fashioned typewriter they jam.

Why havent alternative layouts taken off. Well some have tried, but so many people can touchtype on the QWERTY that it's very hard to ever change it. Can you imagine buying a keyboard with a non QWERTY layout and then having to learn to type all over again?

I have used other programs similar to those I haven't marked and they work fine.

Your not gonna get any posts by ppl who have the 64-bit version saying anything other get it. What advantage does it offer to the average person who uses their pc for internet and music etc? All I see in these threads on various forums is ppl with 64bit trying to justify it and then try and say your ****** if you have 32 bit. The average person doesnt post on forums like this, or have 4gb ram, or play pc games at the highest spec. So because it might offer better performance for some programs, its not gonna make one bit of difference to someone who just uses windows media player, firefox, itunes. Its your pc spec that'll make it better. Everything I use my 32 bit vista for works fine and i dont see how they can work much better: autogk, windows media center, firefox, windows media player, dvbviewer, convertx2dvd, powerdvd, newsleecher. 32 bit will still be going fine by the time the next windows OS comes out.

That's all very well, but you've highlighted a few possible advantages and no disadvantages. Given they're exactly the same price, or in the case of retail you get both discs, why would you install the 32-bit edition?

Oh, and when someone pulls their finger out and rewrites your encoding programs (autogk, convert2dvd), there will be significant performance increases in x64.

Have adobe released, or going to release sometime soon, and x64 compatible plugin? That was my only real gripe with Xp x64 was that I was forced to use the 32bit browser.

Well i doubt 64bit is gonna make an awful lot of difference converting to and from xvid, i'd get a better cpu if I wanted that ( and I could be wrong, but making a 64 bit version of autogk wouldnt be worth the hassle if all those programs that are used in it had to be rewrote to take use of 64 bit). Its not hard to find posts saying so and so doesnt work on vista 64bit and anyone who looks here will see that. So for the average user who wants to get vista now and not have problems out of the box ,then why would they get 64bit.

One thing i read about yesterday was that the mymovies plugin for vista media center doesnt work on vista 64bit as it doesnt let you run 32 bit plugins on it atm. And the mymovies developer plugin said he isnt gonna waste his time trying to compile it in 64bit, when he could use his time for something better.

I value what you're say here, however I feel people are slightly loosing the thread line here and are embarking on a quite difficult debate.

I've already got Vista ultimate which comes with both DVD's for 32 and 64 bit versions. I'm going to have to re-install anyway as I'm getting new PC parts spec'ed in my original post.

So it's not a case of do I spend/waist money on parts and 64-bit versions. I've got it all here infront of me, So i'm in a Red or Blue pill situation here. I just wanted to guage peoples experiences with both versions with the applications i mentioned before I setup my system.

Short of installing x64 as a trial and reverting to x86 if I encounter probs then further advice (Experience not theories) is warmly welcomed.
