Hey bumblebaytuna, Welcome to the Forums.

The support for Windows Vista is now excellent and the majority of the hardware and software out their now work absolutely fine under Windows Vista.

You may be debating over which version to go for. Here is a great graph that compares all of the editions of Windows Vista with one another. The two you are most likely looking at are Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. I have used both and in my opinion Vista Ultimate is not worth the extra £50 over Home Premium.

Now as to weather to buy the 32-bit or the 64-bit edition of Windows Vista. If you have a processor that is capable of handling 64-bit instructions (The Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 is a 64-bit processor) then their is no reason to go for the 32-bit edition. You won't see a massive performance increase going from a 32-bit to a 64-bit operating system as of yet since many programs have been written for 32-bit architectures. However this will be changing in the future because with 64bit being more recognized, more and more programs will be written under 64-bit architectures. When programs are released that are written specifically for 64-bit, you will then start to see a performance increase from 32-bit programs.

Now regarding your graphics card, the ATI X1950 Pro is not DirectX 10. Nvidia have currently got the better cards out in my opinion and are slightly better in the DirectX 10 world than ATI. Now if you are looking at purchasing a DirectX 10 card then take a look at the Nvidia 8800GT series, phenomenal cards for the price. :)

thank you very much you have actually answered what i wanted which sometimes is rare for me in forums , i think i am going to go with the 64 bit basic as mainly all i want to do is game unless there is some other main reason not too.

as for the card thats what i thought but having forked out enough on this new build i will stick with the x1950pro for about a month then go for a dx10 , but im sad in leaving the ati behind, as when i was younger you were either a sega or a nintendo and it was the same with amd , intel and the ati nvidia.
i used to be a amd ati lad but looks like im going to the dark side

thank you for your help and restoring my faith in things on the web

Stay away from Vista basic at all costs! It's a version that should never have been released.

I got the Ultimate version but only cause I got a nice deal through my work (don't think its been worth the extra money paying a fortune for very little extra features) so I would recommend you to go with home premium.
