As title really, just wondering if a combo of my firewall, Avast free, Spybot and SpywareBlaster is a reliable setup to use to ward away the nasties?

I would also probably use a software firewall like Comodo, just so that I can easily chose what does and doesn't get access.

If not, what would youi change from the above and why?

sounds like over kill to me.

get nod32. make use of the router firewall and windows firewall. turn off windows defender and ditch spybot/spyware blaster and use mawlware bytes for a weekly scan

yeah sorry i'm part of of the nod squad.. but i don't think if running vista with uac there is any need to have an on the fly spy scanner running all the time. if you know what you're doing and don't double click on 'smack the monkey adds' you should be more than covered. i had zero spyware when i ran mawlbytes last month

Just leave Windows Vista on its default configuration along with creating a separate standard user account to use as your main account. Then download an anti-virus product such as NOD32, Avast, Avira etc.

You could also use Internet Explorer 7 / 8 Release Candidate which is actually one of the securest browsers to use due to Protected Mode.

Have you got any links to show that Windows Defender is actually as useless as everyone seems to say it is?

no sorry buddy, just don't see the need for it to run on the fly. i still have it and use it for certain things. all i can say is in 16months it has never found anything. running all the time is a drain on the system and if you are savie and have uac on i think you should be fine without it. but clearly each to there own. however when i do home call outs i would never turn it off.

Hehehe, unfortunately not. :p It just seems everyone thinks that Windows Defender is useless but I haven't come across any articles or from personal experience to suggest it is. I also haven't noticed it to slow down my system at all.

i don't think it's useless and i do use it for software settings and so on, i just turn off the on the fly running and scheduled scans

I've just been called upon to deal with a vista machine [UAC on, Windows defender on] that was riddled with malware....

I personally use Avira and Comodo firewall on the laptop [I want outbound filtering - windows firewall doesn't have it]. The key though is using Opera and the mighty Admuncher [or Firefox and Adblock + Noscript].
