hi guys, im restoring a laptop from windows 8 back to vista (person hates w8 with a passion).

laptop is a...
HP presario c700,

I have a key for vista home premium on the bottom of the laptop but have been an idiot and LOST my vista 64bit disc. and was wondering...

1) Does the vista key work for both 64bit and 32 bit?
2) Would there be any noticeable differences between 32bit vs 64bit? any possible compatibility problems or performance loss (i know 32bit is a bit old school now)?

The guy is only using for a few card games, and some internet browsing?

Also, can i grab the windows 8 key (as will not be used) and sell to someone?

THANKS GUYS :D

Keys should be cross compatible between 32/64bit afaik, how much RAM does the laptop have? I'm assuming it would have no more than 4GB for that time period. Overall I'd say you'll be fine installing 32bit on an old laptop, especially for that usage scenario.

As for grabbing the Win8 key, not too sure on how you would do it. I'm pretty sure there's a way to deactivate a key from within the OS, but you may need to phone up MS support to get it deactivated.

meh... prob too much hassle to get win 8 off... thought it might just be a case of using jelly bean key finder.... finding someone who would want to buy it would be the biggest challenge? lol

ram wise it has only 2gb. i might try and put some in now. I cant figure out how to even open cpu-z on win8, so just gonna open her up now.

would there be any compatibilty issues with todays software?

ok thanks mate

having gone through vista, 7 and 8... why would you back to vista, are there even drivers for the system that work on vista?

Have you considered a 'start menu' replacement option instead, lots of users on here seem to have installed one.

the problems/hatred runs much deeper than the start menu. no files on the laptop so a simple install anyway.

never had 7 on it... owner didn't want to pay for it after i suggested the laptop came with a vista key so would cost £0 to install... otherwise it would be 7 all day long. lol.

so yeah i should hope there are vista drivers...

Vista is still a fully supported OS, so I don't see any reason why there would no longer be drivers.

Why you would want to go back to Vista however I have no idea, unless there was a hardware issue which meant I was limited to Vista I would just stick with Windows 8 and install Startisback or the like to make it look more like Windows 7.

In answer to your actual question though, go 64 bit.
