Hey guys,
Im building a new i7 PC and was wondering do i need vista 64 bit or the normal one,and whats the difference

cheers

There are no reasons this day and age not to go for Vista 64Bit, in fact you'll be limited with 32Bit Vista. With Vista 64Bit drivers must be supplied with 32Bit drivers so drivers aren't a problem and I've yet to find a program it doesn't play ball with. I say go for it. And if you plan on upgrading your rig a lot shell out for the full retail edition of Vista so you can transfer it to new computer builds. Although bare in mind when you buy retail you have to pay (£8?) for the 64Bit media :).

If your i7 PC is going to have 4Gb or more of RAM, you need to go 64bit. 32bit operating systems can only access a maximum of 3.3Gb.
That's pretty much the only difference. The game/application performance improvement is negligible.

There is no reason not to go x64, there are some other differences such as enforced driver signing and no 16bit software compatibility, but unless you're running legacy hardware or old games, this shouldn't be an issue. I've used Vista 64 for years and I'd never go back to XP.

Just a few days ago i switched over from XP 32 to Vista 64. I had held off because of reading scary tales of woe on the internet but after getting Vista 64 ultimate as a gift i decided to find out for myself. So far i have been more than impressed with Vista 64 and all my software and hardware is working as intended. Finding drivers has not been an issue and having 4 gig of ram fully seen and ready for use by Vista 64 is a bonus. Loving Vista and not missing Xp......

The problems with driver support and program support that came with moving to 64bit were from early 2007.

These days, just do it.

The only issue I had when I first installed Vista in 2006 was drivers for my Creative sound card, but that hasn't changed much in two years, creative are crap at driver support.

Definitely go for 64 bit. I changed about June 08 to Vista 64 from Vista 32 as I purchased 4gb ram a few days before and wanted to be able to use it and I didn't see any problems upgrading
