Vista 64 Driver install problem

I've downloaded the 158.18 drivers from nvidia's website but I can't install them! The installation starts then about half way through the monitor switches off.

There's lots of hard drive activity, so I leave it to see what happens, but nothing ever does. Eventually the hard drive activity stops and my PC just sits there with the monitor in standby mode. The only thing I can do is hold the power button down for a few seconds and switch my pc off, then back on again. Obviously Windows complains about not being shut down safely etc

I'm using a 7950GX2 and Vista Ultimate 64. Can anyone shed any light?

Thanks.

Hi cracker,

I can't say I've got any expertise with either Vista64 or with the 7950GX2's, but when your PC seems to have finished whatever it was doing, (the hard drive activity stops) have you tried hitting the power button, and waiting to see whether the PC shuts down by itself?
I mean, hitting the power button just sends the system a sort of "shutdown command". If the system does shut down, then at least you know that after the PC has finished whatever it was doing, it's still responsive.

Also, have you had the GX2 running with previous versions of the nVidia drivers?
You might just have to skip out this driver release if you've had the GX2 working on older drivers :(

Sorry I can't be of more help,

Banjo ;_;

I got a similar problem with the 158.24's...rather concerning. After the monitor turned off I hard reset the PC, and they seemed to go in ok from there.

I tried doing the "shut down" trick by pressing the power button but nothing happens. A hard reset is my only option.

I wonder if having UAC switched on is anything to do with it? I'll have a play around today and see what happens.
