Yesterday I was playing around as one does on the internet [no, not pr0n] and Vista froze. Task manager wouldn't come up so I had to hit the reset button. On doing this it wouldn't boot. It hung on POST and then came up with "disk read error, please press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart". On pressing reset again Vista booted.

I was playing a game later on, and on reloading a section of the game Vista froze again and I got the same error on bootup. After giving the PC a 'break' it worked again.

Reading around, most people seem to get this error because they need to update their BIOS rather than it being a problem with the HDD. However, I don't see why it would be a problem with the BIOS if it occured while playing a game... and I don't think it's the hard drive. Can anyone help?

Well, that's the great part. The USB keyboard I have only works when the OS has booted.... so getting into the BIOS is near impossible. I have a spare keyboard... but that's USB as well.

You need to enable USB legacy in BIOS, just hit delete to enter BIOS... oh wait. :D You can pickup a cheap ps2 keybaod for about £1 these days! You should be able to flash CMOS via a flopppy and ezflash or whatever your program is though.

I am thinking your issue may be memory related. You might have a dodgy stick or need to increase memory voltage. Or it could be a dodgy sector on the drive, try running a full disk check with surface scan.
