Ok at the moment i have vista ultimate 32 but ive also got 64 bit version and 4 gigs of ram and am wondering if its worth upgrading to 64.
I play a lot of games and i dont want to lose the ability to play any if i upgrade to 64, thanks in advance.

This is my results and it is my final conclusion. The support for 32-bit application on Windows Vista x64 is superb (however, some may cause system hiccups). As for Windows XP x64 ... don't bother lol

Vista 64 bit does otherwise run like a dream and i'd recommend it to anyone, just make sure you get the most uptodate drivers for your machine for all your devices and make sure you have all the necessary updates that microsoft release, other than that there shouldnt be many hiccups at all, its all good *thumbs up*

vista 64 - generally ok, slow network and hard drive transfers aside, as long as you have the latest drivers etc.

I have one program that will not install on v64 no matter what (it point blank says no) and thats solidworks 2008.

As to games - not a clue as I don't use my pc for games.

if you do upgrade your OS naturally will see all of the 4gb of system ram

i game on Vista x64 .QW-ET ,HL2,Crysis ,Bio,UT3 etc etc all working fine

as the above posters have said just make sure all drivers etc are up to date (as with any OS)

games aside ,you may find some software won’t work under x64 for example Security software such as HIPS but software compatibility for x64 vista has really improved.

you say you have both versions why not image your existing 32bit Vista install then install the x64 version and see how you get on with it .

Please don't turn this into a Vista trashing thread.

You will not run into any problems with games, but you might drivers (depends on your hardware config)

Windows 64bit versions is to support more memory. That's all it is good for. If you want more than 2GB memory get a 64bit os.

Signed drivers have to have 32bit and 64bit version for vista?
Vista 64bit is not ONLY good for more memory. Patchguard for one example.

My point was that it does exactly what the 32 bit os does except its 64bit processing.

Everyone with 64 bit Vista will run into the same problems if not more as a 32 bit user would due to little lack of application and driver support. People with hardware more than a few years old really will struggle with drivers, which is a very weak point of 64bit computing.

If it's a new build fair enough theres support there for it but I wish you guys would have abit of consideration for the old hardware users.

apart from it does a lot more than what the 32bit version does.

Tell me exactly what it does then that a home/business user would benifit from it then and then justify your answer with the users of this forum.

why don't you read the link?

increased security, faster 32 and 64bit processing due to q-words and more. As well as future proof.

I read the link and you don't get what I am saying. For a user that builds a pc why is it worth the hassel when they run into problems. You say it like everyone has knowledge like yourself and other users of the forum but one thing you fail to remember is not everyone does have the knowledge to find drivers and applications e.t.c. Yet alone to worry about security. They go off the words of experienced users and yet they still can't configure the os correctly so whats the point.

You don't know how much knowledge a user has and everytime "get vista 64 bit its better blah blah".

Have some respect for the home user level. I ain't pointing fingers at the people who love Vista 64bit and does use it..I'm pointing fingers to the whole forum.

I have greta knowledge of home users.. why don't you just go read the other thread. If people can't find drivers they shouldn't be using vista fullstop at the moment.

Security si a huge assert for home users. they might not know how it works. But it's one of the areas they care about the most.

How can they care about it when they don't know about it.

If you have a huge knowledge of home users then how do you know what knowledge they acctually have, someone might have hardware knowledge with very little software knowledge..

If someone asks what os they should use and you point them in a Vista scenario.. they buy it and most has many problems with it been a new os. I gaurentee now if you search theres been a lot of problems that users have.

But that's the wonderful thing, you get all of the benefits without needing any user interaction. It simply does everything behind the scenes, making your experience faster and more secure.

Let me give an analogy. XP is a lot more stable then any of it's predecessors. Why? Well I could spend a few hours typing out exactly why, but it doesn't matter for most people. They just have one less thing to moan about. It just works, just like the improvements in Vista X64.
