I have an OEM copy of vista 64 which had been used on a machine which has since been broken up and sold. Vista was obviously activated.

I am about to do a new build, what is the likeliehood of getting this to work on the the new pc. When it comes to reactivation (over phone maybe) could I said my mobo died or something and have had to rebuild or will I have to pay for a new key?

Or does it depend on which side of the bed whoever I speak to got out of?

If it needs renewing does anyone know the cost, would it be cheaper to buy a new oem copy when I order my components?

Cheers

AFAIK OEM licenses are tied to the motherboard.
When one is changed the license should be legally repurchased.
That said, if youa ctivate over the internet, it'll direct you to a phone service, it'll have you type in 6*8 batches of numbers, and it'll give you 8*6 batches back to type into your windows, that will reactivate it.

They allow a certain amount of leeway, I had to reactivate after a mobo died on me some time ago, and althought the same model replaced it, windows still required reactivation.

Legally:

You now require a new Windows license.
OEM licenses are cheaper and more restrictive than Retail licenses.
One of the restrictions is that they are tied to the motherboard on which they are first installed.
You can perform any number of upgrades to your machine, however as soon as the motherboard is replaced then the license is no longer valid and you will need to purchase a new one.

Physically:

OS will install with NO Problems.
OS will 99% certainly activate online without a problem and even if it doesn't, just don't tell them 100% the truth when you call up and it will be activated.

Final Results:

Use the OEM license on another machine and you are no more legal than somebody who illegally downloaded a warez copy of Windows.
