Because I'm running out of room on my hard drives, and there is free shipping here, I'm thinking of getting a 3rd hard drive. Now this also has the added benefit of meaning its easier for me to try out Vista 64, as I've got a copy knocking around.

I've been using the 32-bit version since it came out, with the only slight problem being the original belkin drivers were a POS. But that's been fixed now.

Anyway, from what I've heard, as I have a 64-bit CPU (E6600) it would be better for me to run the 64 bit os, as its more efficient or something, and there are very few driver problems? One thing I noticed in the other thread was that soundblaster cards weren't working too well? I've got an X-fi Xtreme gamer, and wouldn't want to disable it just because of the OS.

So, would I see much of a performance difference to make it worthwhile, or should I stick to my 32bit version, and just use the new drive for storage?

Specs:
E6600 (OC'ed 2.52Ghz)
X1950XT 512Mb
Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer
2Gb giel PC6400 ram
Belkin wireless PCI card.

Thanks

Well I've only gotten 64bit because I intend to upgrade to 4GB of RAM later on, when it's actually going to be used. I've heard some horror stories about the X-Fi, but a lot of people seem to be ok with it now, finding drivers and such.

i have a gamer and it gave me less trouble on 64bit than it did on 32bit, worked straight away once driver was installed. general Os seems smoother etc as well. its very nice.

add another 40 quid on to your order and get another 2GB and your laughing :)

why pay for another copy of vista if you already have one, unless you are going to get 2 more GB or ram (even then its borderline if you should upgrade), stick with 32bit, until your next build, remember OEM versions are locked to one PC so you might as well wait it out.

I'm able to get a copy of it through uni, so thats not a problem. Its just if its worth installing it on the new hard drive, or if I should just leave it. Would getting another 2Gb of ram give a large boost? I'd be getting This stuff as its exactly what I have in at the moment. Would I also have to reactivate my copy of Vista32 when adding ram, or is that not seen as a major enough change?

Finally, whats all this about having to press F8 if you have unsigned drivers, or something? Would that affect me, or is that more of a thing in the past now manufacturers are releasing official 64-bit drivers?

If you are getting it for free then it's ok. No adding more RAM doesn't require a reactivating of an OEM copy of Vista. Only thing that requires that from what i know is a motherboard change.
Using the 64-bit Version and using 4GB of run should make the system feel more responsibe and smoother but it also depends why you need 4GB of RAM for. What are you planning of using the PC for. If it's for playing games and generally using software that don't allocate such amount of RAM you won't see any noticible difference. On the other hand if you are using programs like Photoshop for example that perform better with more RAM then you shall be in for a treat.

depends my PC can use 3+GB just playing crysis or the witcher or whatever. 1GB for general idling with nothing on. those extra few really help from my experience of going 2GB and 32 to 64bit and 4GB
