Is it worth going for Vista 64bit with my new conroe setup or should i stick with the 32bit edition cos i know it will work? Not seen too many 64bit apps around to take the risk yet. Any comment?

I've been wondering this too, I gather the best advice is that as it is the wayt of the future then it is the opne to choose. However, I am just as concerned about the lack of 64 bit packages. The only significant package I know about is the 64 bit version of OpenOffice which is a sort of must have for a computer. I suspect6 games will be some time getting there.

I think I will be going for the 32 bit OEM version as the cost is not that great. Mydual core AMD system has been going a while but has yet to meet much to annoy it so I'll stick with it for a bit longer so OEM will be fine. 0

I am running vista64bit, so far all my apps are running without any problems,

just waiting for a better Nvidia driver which enables sli on gf7 series...

nice and smooth, ;)

I've gone for Vista 64 and I'm not looking back! If you're buying a new OS might as well make it 64. Some will say there's nothing out to warrant a 64 bit OS. That may have been true when XP 64 appeared but I don't think this is the case now.

People are under the impression 32bit apps won't run on Vista 64 which simply isn't true. You may stumble upon the odd challenge but reading some posts here on OC you'd think 64 bit produces nothing but problems!

As a side note, I've had no trouble at all with ATIs drivers :)

64bit Ultimate here

On a Asus A8N Sli Premium, i have 2 problems.

1, Oki havent released Vista Drivers Yet

2, Ultramon resets the Aero theme to Aero Basic

Other than that all fine and dandy, even BF2 seems to rn smoother

im in the same situtation also.

but regarding the 64bit version. i have my two raptors running in RAID 0. and i have split them into 70gig partitions. one for windows xp pro. other for vista.

but the thing is. last time i tried to install windows xp pro 64bit. it was having problems finding the RAID 0 and the controllers when you install it, and boot the driver from the floppy... do you have to do this for windows vista 64 aswell?

has anyone got there's on a RAID 0???

also... if you purchase the 32bit version. can you order that dvd for the 64 bit aswell for £7?

im very tempted to upgrade to 64, but i may wait till crysis is out, then upgrade my graphics card to 8800, then purchase vista too.

I used Ultimate x64 and still working great as there are some software came up just now for support x64 but it quite slowly - Ive just download and bought PDF Factory that support x64 edition for Vista as it worked great - by this summer all software games or others will fully support for x64 - it take time to build up new software for x64 as x86 already support all software you can use it - Im still happy with x64 as it run so fast. :)

Im building my new PC tomorrow with Vista 64bit. I shall be putting my two samsungs disks in RAID0. Im gonna be running it on a Asus P5B Deluxe. The only real thing I am concerned about really is the current lack of driver support for my WinTV nova 500. I have seen the 32bit driver for this but im unsure whether or not this will work... I guess ill just have to wait and see.

As a gamer, can anyone tell me what advantages Vista64 will have over Vista32 in let's say, the next year or 2, because right now, all I am seeing is the ability to address more than 3Gb of RAM.

Everyone keeps saying go for 64, but really I do not see any point in the next few years unless you are going to hit this 3Gb limit a lot.

You can move 64-bit numbers around? That's twice the width you usually have.

To what end? The 64bit version of Vista runs games at the same speed as the 32bit version, give or take the odd few frames here and there.

That's because they're run in 32-bit mode - the OS switches the processor back to 32-bit mode for the code that requires it.

When future games are written and compiled for 64-bit processors, there should be a noticeable difference. The 32-bit to 64-bit jump means (almost) twice the amount of data can be processed per clock cycle. Many video/audio encoding software houses & scientific program developers are claiming significant improvements due to 64-bit processing. Game houses are expecting improvements too.

No problems here.

If you have a graphics card newer than the X800/6800 you're not going to notice the drop anyway, that isn't taking into account the drivers, but that's the same for x86 or x64.

Go for x64. :)

Yep, I see that which brings me back to my original statement that, in the next year or 2, what is the advantage of having Vista64 over Vista32 games wise?

Vista will install to the raid partition no problems.
XP requires the Driver from the floppy

Because:
1. 64bit games will be able to access more memory (Windows/BIOS take a large address space, leaving around 3Gb Max for applications - 2Gb max for one app, iirc. 2Gb is already 'standard' in new PCs - won't be long before that doubles again)

2. 64bit games allow almost double the data per clock cycle, increasing processing performance significantly. Games performance should really benefit from this. Crytek (makers of Crysis) say they're seeing a 10-15% performance increase per thread - allowing for more realistic gameplay, I would imagine (I'm not a gamer!)

Here's some wishy washy quote from MS:
"Gamers routinely push the boundaries of 32-bit PC architecture, and video game developers are at work right now building exciting 64-bit native games to help push these limits even further. Since data in memory is accessed about 10,000 times faster than it is on a disk drive, 64-bit native games hold the potential for significantly faster graphics rendering, producing photo-realistic immersion and rapid-fire play without annoying delays. These improvements, along with other benefits of 64-bit architecture, should enable artificial intelligence and 3-D games that were not possible in the past."

had a few crashes but they were down to Creative Labs not having a proper sound driver out yet

BF2142 seem to soak memory in it and I now have 4gb as 2gb wasn't enough (blue screens when it couldn't allocate any more memory)

Anyone who is unsure about going for the 64 bit vista, why not just buy the 32 bit version, and then send off for the 64 bit disc for just over 7 pound from Microsoft aswell!

You could install the 32 bit version for now and then swap over to the 64 bit vista when you feel the time is right ;)
