vista activation problem

I have Vista home premium 64 (OEM) and recently had to re-install it as i was upgrading my system. The problem is that after installing, the windows automatically tries to activate itself and when it does, a message comes up saying the key is already in use and i have to buy a new one. It is silly since i already activated windows the very first time i installed it. Does it mean its only one time activation and if re-installation is required i need to buy a new key? How can i re-activate windows again with the key which i already have?

You say you were upgrading your system.
Was one of those upgrades a new motherboard?
If so your old license does actually die with your old motherboard.
