ok after a day of recovering my Vista Ultimate 64 install....

Have run into a problem with the 4 sticks of DDR2 geil memory.

If I take 2 out then everything seems fine. Pop the other 2 in and blue screen.... bad.

On the sticks it states settings of .... 4 4 4 12 Voltage 2.1 volts.
Then on the Geil website it states they can run upto 3 Volts so use 2.8!

My mobo - Intel Bad Axe 2 ... volts can be 2.12 or slightly less... so which is better...

just getting the MS update ... but its got to be BIOS settings problem.

Just not sure which to set now.

Firstly does both pairs work fine on their own?

I believe you may have read the voltages wrong on the Geil website, it may have stated + .3 on top of the standard 1.8v, 1.8+.3=2.1v.

Have you tried upping the NB volts a tad with 4 sticks in?

well Vista was working with the 4gb in.... I installed it from my Xp drive.... anyways after a long day getting rid of the XP drive..... long story lol.

Went to put the Vista 64 on my raptors.... after many hangs etc... got the girlfriends laptop out and did a search.... loads of people not been able to install with 4gb in ... so I took 2gb out ...and voila worked... and is working fine now... just dont see the point of having another 2gb sat here doing nothing.

The voltage states 2.1v on the 4 identical sticks.

There is an update from MS for the 4gb problem ... but this wont install and says not applicable to my system !

so I know it works with the 4 gigs in ...... Ive since did a BIOS update as well before installing .... so cant remember what the timings were for the ram in the BIOS.

found this on the Geil website !

Q: I installed GeIL DDR memory module and my Windows won't start every time I boot, and crashes almost immediately even if it does start. What did I do wrong?
A: On some motherboards, the memory voltage sensor is not accurately calibrated and the "DIMM Voltage" is being mis-represented in BIOS screen. Set/adjust the memory core voltage to 2.7 or 2.8 volts. All GeIL memory modules have passed the torture test at 3v to survive in this PC market filled with all sorts of different grade power supply units and motherboard voltage sensors.

It is only installing you *may* have probs with 4gb. I certainly did not. Insure you have sp1 or at least kb929777 installed and you should be good to go with 4gb installed back in.

all updates have been installed (running Service pack 1)
but theres no kb929777 on the list to `uninstall` (just to check)

when I manually download kb929777 it states not for my system (yep checked its the 64 bit download)

Hey doc - you running 2 x 2 gb sticks or 4 x 1 ?

My MB wont run four sticks of Geil at stock voltages, not even for the install. I had to install with 1 stick and then increase the voltage to make it stable.

Took me ages to work out as my case doesn't have a case speaker.

cheers.
yeah getting to be a bit of a hassle this.

well the options on the mobo (Intel bad axe 2) is 2.08 or 2.12 (I guess the latter is equiv to 2.1v sticker on the ram)

the worst thing is it was working when dual booting - now i installed again... am on vista now ... it works well ... put the other sticks in and no go. I cant even use 3 sticks.... the `3rd has to be equal to the other 2 i.e. 2 x 1gb and 1 x 2 gb)

other options are "800mhz ..... 667"
other one is erm.... 300..... 266..... etc <<<< is this worth changing ... was on default.

The patch says what you're seeing as it's already installed, Hence it won't apply to your system

Set the ram to 2.08 and raise whatever is equiv wording in bios for the NB, Try NB raised 1 notch, Then 2

Still no good drop NB down 1 notch and ram volts up 1 notch etc etc

My 8gig g-skill runs @ 1068 at 1.9v in bios and mch NB is 1 notch up (abit ip35 pro)

Your mobo isn't known for 4 module over volting of ram is it ??, I mean set it to 2.1v and with 4 slots filled it pumps over that to the ram ?

Hmm, When i had vista x64 and ocz ram problems i also had to use a lone stick to install then add patch then another stick then after updates (no sp1 at the time) add last 2 ram

Think it maybe one of those "mess with a lot of variables in bios to get stable) or redo with 1 stick if all else fails

Feel for ya fella, Had this a while back and it drove me mad

Hope ya get it sorted ;)

Ciao

yeah its starting to get on my nerves now !

Each time it dont post - power off - head in and move BIOS jumper then default... start again.... taking tooo long.

might just ditch this ram and get 2 x 2gb sticks.

anybody care to recommend the above for my board ?

ok I got it sorted now.

Changed the memory settings - all seems fine again - 4gb + Vista.
Will just use these for a while - see how I get on.

Thanks for the help people.

oh no I havent - started getting random BSODS now ... even when not actually doing anuything !

took 2 sticks out and it seems fine again.

do you guys reckon I should just order different memory - and ditch these 4 sticks of Geil ?

I posted on the Geil forums...

one of the guys suggested running

800 mhz - 5 5 5 15 @ 2.12 Volts.
and upped proc voltage to 1.65 from 1.55 v.
this got me booted up with the 4 gigs.... windows just randomly BSODs

the sticks have stickers on saying

4 4 4 12 and 2.1 v
(putting 4 sticks in @ these speeds wont even post)

really annoying because this WAS working ... the problems started when I get rid of a drive with Xp on and tried to install Vista.... I also updated the BIOS which has changed my ram timings.

Dont really want to buy some more memory - but thinking about 2 sticks... this is taking toooo long !
Are the 2 sets above the way to go ?

At those settings can you up whatever the northbridge is in your specific bios by 1 notch and try that ??

Maybe 4 sticks just needs a bit more juice for the filled 4 slots

You could also go up another setting on NB or up a tad on ram volts

Seems volt related now that 4 work but bsod randomly, actual ram settings look ok as they pretty slack (ohh arr missus)

Read Again

Try ram at 2.1v or ya nearest as you say

If still the same random bsod's .............

Drop ram volts down again and mess with northbridge

Gotta be just finding the sweetspot there as 5,5,5,15 is there just not stable

Once the voltages are ok at those settings you can try for faster ram timings (not that in real-life i think you'd notice anyways)

I had this on my ip35 pro and 8 gig g-skill, But really i had to up NB a notch and then i could lower ram below makers spec lol

Hope ya sort it, Stick with it, and as you probably are write down each setting then move on (i know it's a chore and can't suggest anything easier)

got some Corsair 2 x 2gb flavour today.

Popped them in - instant boot and been fine tonight so far.

Guess my board is fussy with the 4 slots filled .... takes too much time and effort to find the right ram timings and or voltages.

A lesson learned.
Thanks for the respones guys.
