I heard something from a friend that when you first install vista the max amount of ram you can use is 2gb.Then you have to then download a patch from microsoft to enable the use of 4gb is this true otherwise you get the BSOD?

That is a case with some configurations, but is by no means the norm.

The patch you require is Windows6.0-KB929777-v2-x86. This is easily found and downloaded direct from MS just by typing in the search KB929777.
The most common problem when installing Vista is a diplay adapter conflict which uses the same memory hole as something like the ATK110 on the ASUS motherboards. An up to date version is downloaded as a solution on reboot.
For your video card to occupy the same IRQ as the ATA I/O causes the system to give you the BSOD and a reboot.
I hope the above helps, anyway.

No, what there is, though, is a patch designed to help vista deal with the "2 gig per application" issue.

This isn't a problem with vista, it's a problem with 32-bit. It's just more apparent under vista.

Microsoft have released an update that fixes an issue when installing Vista 32bit/64bit on a system that has more thatn 3GB of ram installed (BSOD "STOP 0x0000000A"), link below.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777

the provided article above said:
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
• The computer uses more than 3 GB of RAM.
The computer uses a storage system that is running the Storport miniport driver.
• The computer uses a controller that uses 32-bit direct memory access (DMA).

Storport is rarely found on average PCs.
