Hey all,

I've been thinking, is it worth getting Vista at the moment for gaming purposes? I'm already happy with XP Pro at the moment but I hear Vista's getting more and more popular on the gaming front. I've heard also that it has frame rate problems with such games as Css, BF2?

Any views on this?

Ive tried to get on with it for the last week.

I got it for nothing through work. I normally play CS:S, BF2142 and a few others. Since installing Vista ive had a number of problems with Battlefield such as slower frame rates with BF & CS, random 'This program is not responding' in a game of BF and even having problems with Ventrilo (-Although probably XF-fi driver problem :o )

So much to say ive formatted and put XP Home back on and now dual booting. Posted in the Games section about my problems with BF2142.

All the above is with Dx9 games. Ive had no problems with anything DX10 or designed for Vista out of the box. Lost Planet runs v.nice.

If your happy with XP Pro, stick with it mate ;)

Apart from the loss of frame rate, was Gameplay any different in Cs for example? Sharper textures, materials etc?.

from what i've read

ati users are getting the sweeter end of the stick at the moment, many nvidia users are getting hell with a lot of drivers (including myself)

xp flies along compared to any stable vista driver i've tried on my 7900gt

most of the drivers i've tried crap out when coming out of sleep mode :/

Hard put my finger on what was different, but in XP, they just play and look a little better.

BF2142 was my mine gripe, Just couldnt put up with how it ran compaired with XP which was perfect.

I play BF2142, CoH, LOTRO, & HL2 all with no problems at all, in fact it feels more stable to me, i've not had a bluescreen since i've installed /shrug.

I started off with XP SP2 / Vista x64 in dual boot. After a couple of months I found I never booted to XP so did a reinstall and reclaimed the drive space. Having said that I have a relatively new spec machine so you mileage may vary

No problem with the few games I've tried. Hitman Blood Money, The GRAW2 demo, the Tomb Raider Anniversary demo, all ran flawlessly.

I play HL2, CSS and Insurgency on Vista with an Nvidia 8800GTS and not problems now. I think early on there were issues but since new drivers for soundcard and GPU no problems now :)
