I have installed the latest Vista drivers/utilities for my Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard but my 5.1 surround sound is not working properly!

I cant get any sounds to come from the speakers that Vista shows in the L or R position

In 5.1 mode the speakers that are physically in the L/R position give no sound but the C, Sub, SL and SR positions work correctly.

If I change the settings to 7.1 then the speakers that are physically in the L/R position give sound as the SL/SR speakers and what was the SL/SR speakers give sound as the RL and RR speakers!

Under no combination do I get L or R sound and as I assume this is where the bulk of sounds are directed would explain why i'm not hearing a lot!!

Any suggestions?

i had probs with my sound, and i went to "play back devices" by right clicking on the sound icon in the taskbar selected my speakers and clicked on "properties" then went to "enhancements" tab and scrolled down the list and clicked "speaker fill"

This could be the hardware abstraction layer problem. Google it for more info.

Basically Microsoft have got rid of the way most games do their surround sound for Vista and only Creative soundcards have a work around so far.

Does this affect movies too?

Tried setting the 'Speaker Fill' option and now I can play CD's etc but main sound comes through the center speaker, nothing through L/R speakers and some support sound from the SL/SR speakers!

If I use 7.1 mode then the main sound still comes through the center speaker and i get supporting sound from the other four speakers!!

SORTED - The lights not very good in my room so I had the lime front speaker cable plugged into the grey side speaker port as I expected the connections to be in a line.

I discovered this error when I fell back to the last resort and looked in the manual! ;)

Turned the speaker fill off now as seems to be working fine.

Thanks for your suggestions anyway.
